Requirements for Armed Security Guards
In order to become an armed security guard, you must first complete all of the requirements to be an unarmed security guard. That means that you must be at least 18 years of age, not have any serious criminal convictions on your record and either be a citizen of the United States or have a green card. Having met these requirements, you must have completed your 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Security Guard Training Course, passed your fingerprint screening, applied for and received your Security Guard Registration Card. As with all security guards, you must also complete your 16 Hour In Service Training Course within 90 days of starting work as a security guard.
In addition to all of the requirements for unarmed security guards, armed security guards must possess a valid NYS pistol license and must complete a 47 hour firearms training course for security guards before they can apply for a special armed guard registration card.
